In a self defense situation, it is not only our body, but also our mind that we must implement. It is important not to put yourself in avoidable situations where you may encounter danger. Next, you have your verbal skills to rely on. Then, if neither option is successful, the physical option for self defense may have to come into play. This can include striking techniques, restraining techniques, and take-downs. A physical reaction is your last resort. As karateka, we do not attack first and must never engage in excessive force.
